How Faith Works

Ten Commandments or One Commandment?

Matthew 22:34-40 - The master link: The great commandment – Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, soul, and mind. Love thy neighbor as thyself. Loving God and your neighbor makes everything else work.
2 John 1:6a – “This is love, that we walk after [according to] His commandments.”
John 13:34, 1 John 2:7&8, 2 John 1:5, John 15:17 – Love one another as Christ loves us; not just now, but since the beginning.

Why You Need Love

v.8 – new or old? See ch 3:11. It’s an old message, but new to them because they had not been following it.
v.10 – LUVYOBRO – See ch 3:7-10; 3:23. You must love your brother and do righteousness if you want to abide in the light and not stumble.
v.13,14 – The result? – See ch 4:4, 5:4, 5:18. We have the ability to “overcome the wicked one” if we walk in love.

Love in Action

1 John 3:1-17

v.10 – If you don’t love, you abide in the Devil
1 John 4:16 – If you dwell in love, you dwell in God and God in your life
Psalm 91:1-2 – Dwell in God and say (choose) to receive protection and the fruit of the spirit

v.15 – Can haters go to heaven? No. If you hate, you are a murderer
v.16 – How do you show love? Lay down your life for your brethren. Give of your time and money
v.17 – You are sitting on the real test . . . your wallet!
v.21,22 – Be sure you are asking in accordance with God’s will so you can be confident when you ask. Also, keep His commandments; don’t let your heart condemn you.

Matthew 5:43-48 – Love your enemy
John 15:9-14 – Abide in His love and refill your joy
Luke 4:29 – Jesus escaped a hanging by walking in love
John 8:59 – Jesus was able to escape the angry mob by walking in love
John 10:31,39 – Jesus escaped another stoning by walking in love
John 13:35 – Men will know that you are His disciple by your love for one another
John 14:12,14-15 – Benefits of walking in love – If we believe in Him, keep His commandments, and ask in His name, He will do anything
Mark 4:35-41 – Jesus calmed the storm by not walking in fear, but in love

v.3 – Question the spirits – If a spirit will not confess that Jesus came in the flesh, it is not of God
v.4 – My confession: “I am an overcomer (of devils and demons) because greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world!”
v.7 – To be a lover like God, you must be born of God and know God
v.12 – “perfected” actually means “full maturity”
v.16 – God is love
v.18 – Fear has what? If your fear, you are not made perfect (fully mature) in love. Love overcomes fear, not faith . . . faith works by love. Fear puts your spirit in (Heb 2:15)
v.19 – Why do we love Him? Because he first loved us
v.21 – You don’t have to like your brother, but you do have to love him!

1 John 5:1-18

v.1 – If you love God, you must love Jesus and other Christians
v.3 – God’s commands are not burdensome
v.4 – What overcomes the world, the devil, sickness & disease, . . . ? Your Faith! (1 Jn 2:13-14)
v.5 – Faith in what? Jesus (see 4:4)
v.10 – People who don’t accept Jesus as their Lord are calling God a liar. Not making a decision IS making a decision!
v.12 – No Son, no LIFE
v.13 – Why? So you may know! See 1 John 1:4
v.14 – Why can we pray confidently, knowing for 100% sure God hears us? Because if we pray in accordance to His will He will hear us. Instead of looking at what you can’t do in the physical world (smoking, drinking, cussing, etc.), look at what you CAN do in the spiritual realm! See Romans 12:2, 1 Corinthians 2:10
v.15 – We can petition God for ANYTHING and know he hears us if we do what? Ask according to His will and know that He hears us
